For example, a sump pump that uses 1,050 watts running uses approximately 2,000 watts to start, and a 1/3-horsepower furnace motor requires 1400 watts to start.
But appliances that produce heat to function, such as electric water heaters, coffee pots and televisions, do not need more wattage to start. The Refigerator/Freezer Exception Both refrigerators and freezers use an electric motor and a compressor to generate cold air. In essence, these are considered as two electric motors. Therefore, you must triple the start-up wattage. In the case of a refrigerator or freezer, if the running wattage is indicated as 700 watts, the start-up wattage will be about 2,100 watts, and you must allow for this when using a 5,500-watt electrical generator when other appliances are plugged into it.
User Tips Since start-up wattage is greater than running wattage, unplug other appliances first before starting up appliances with a larger start-up wattage draw. For example, if you are running 4,000 watts of appliances off of the 5,500 watt generator and you need 2,100 watts of start-up power for your freezer, temporarily unplug the coffee maker and the television. Both of those appliances together use approximately 2,000 watts of power.
Once the freezer is started and running, and now using only 700 watts of power, plug the coffee maker and the television back into the circuit.
